Many different types of Protozoa, "animal like" protists, can be found in the creek. All are unicellular and are capable of movement. Small "hairlike" extensions called cilia, long "hair like" structures called flagella, or cytoplasmic extenions called pseudopods may be used for movement. Many representatives are very motile and often very small. Vorticella usually uses a stalk like extension of its cell to attach itself to a surface. It uses a circular ring of cilia to create a current of water down into its bell shape cell structure. Small bits of organic matter collect in a pocket, form a vacuole, and then enter the cell as food.
