Many different types of green algae can be found in the creek. Green algae belong to the phyla Chlorophyta ("green plant"). Many species of green algae form long chains of cells (filaments) and are often referred to as filamentous green algae. They are commonly found growing on the surfaces of rocks on the creek bed. Volvox is an example of a colnial green algae. Unlike most of the colonial green algae that form long filaments, volvox forms large hollowed sphere shaped clusters of cells. Many of the cells are equipped with flagella that propel the sphere of cells in the water. In addition there is some cell specialization among the colony. Some cells are specialized to move the colony while others are responsible for reprodcution. Large dark spots on the surface of the sphere are specialized reproductive cells.
