Interesting Factoids:
The dragon fly is common in the spring and summer months. Eggs are laid
in the water and develop into a larva stage that remains in the water until ready
to emerge as the adult. The larva are carnivorous and as they mature they become
excellent swimmers. Dragon fly larvae are sensitive to low dissolved oxygen levels
and therefore can act as an indicator of water quality. The two pictures above are
of a dragon fly larvae caught in October at creek
site #4 and raised in an aquarium in Mr. Thiels classroom. The second picture
is the same organism three weeks later. |
