June 28 Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Prinicip.
July 28 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
August 4 Germany invades Belgium and starts exercising its hostile activities.
August 10 Fighting begins on the Eastern Front with Austro-Hungarian invasion of Russia.
September 6-9 The Allies successfully deter German progression in France as the First Battle of the Marne ends.

1915

February 18 Germany begins to blockade Great Britain with the use of its U-boats.
April 25 Allied troops land on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
May 7 A German U-boat sinks the Lusitania prompting President Wilson to urge Germany to restrain from attacking civilian transports.
May 23 Italy declares war on Austria-Hungary bringing forth the Italian Front.

1916

February 21 The Germans proceed with the Battle of Verdun.
May 31 - June 1 The British fleet and the German fleet ensue in the Battle of Jutland.
July 1 The Allies launch the Battle of the Somme.

1917

February 1 Germany resumes its unrestricted submarine warfare.
April 6 The United States of America declares war on Germany.
June 24 American troops start to arrive in France.
December 15 Russia signs a peace accord with Germany, halting the fighting on the Eastern Front.

1918

January 8 President Woodrow Wilson announces his Fourteen Points which would later be rejected in peace talks.
March 3 Russia signs the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
March 21 Germany launches the first of three final offensives on the Western Front.
September 26 The Allies counter-attack with its final offensive action on the Western Front.
November 11 Germany signs the armistice ending World War I.

1919

June 28 Germany signs Treaty of Versailles.
September Austria signs Treaty of St.-Germain
November Bulgaria signs Treaty of Neuilly
