| August 10 | Fighting begins on the Eastern Front with Austro-Hungarian invasion of Russia. |
| September 6-9 | The Allies successfully deter German progression in France as the First Battle of the Marne ends. |

| February 18 | Germany begins to blockade Great Britain with the use of its U-boats. |
| April 25 | Allied troops land on the Gallipoli Peninsula. |
| May 7 | A German U-boat sinks the Lusitania prompting President Wilson to urge Germany to restrain from attacking civilian transports. |
