American Sign Language is now looked at as a language seperate from English. Hearing-impared students in the United States normally learn ASL as a "spoken" language and English as the dialect for reading and writing.

Only 1.3% of all students considered "disabled" are hearing-impared. Other categories of "disabled" include spech impairments, mental retardation, severe emotional problems, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments, or any combination of these.
