Tower of London

The Tower of London, a royal fortress and landmark of London, is located on the North bank of the River Thames, east to London.

In 1066 William the Conqueror built fortifications there to dominate the mercantile community and to control the Pool of London, a major pot.

The White tower was begun in 1078 and fortifications made to it in the 12^th and 13^th century as a sight of defense and protection.

There were 13 Inner curtain Towers; Best known are: The Bloody Tower, the Beauchamp Tower, and the Wakefield Tower.

Outer Curtain has six towers and two bastions surrounded originally by a moat but recently drained.

The whole building Covers approximately 18 acres of lands and has served many purposes.

Until the 17^th Century it was royal Residence. It’s also held the Royal Mint, Public Records, the Royal Menageries, and in1994 the Crown Jewels, originally in the underground Jewel House.
