Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is an enormous statue on Liberty Island, located in New York City’s harbor. It is a symbol of freedom for many people throughout the United States. The statue depicts a woman in a flowing green robe with a spiked crown on her head, broken chains at her feet, a torch in her left hand, and a book in her right hand. Inscribed on the book is "July IV MDCCLXXVI" or "July 4, 1776."

The Statue of Liberty was designed by the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, who admired the United States. The statue was built in France and then pieced together on Liberty Island. It is 306 feet high from the pedestal to the top of the torch, and weighs 256 tons. The statue was given by France to the U.S. to celebrate the centennial of United States independence.
