Mt. Fuji (Fuji-yama)

Located on the island of Honshu, Mt. Fuji holds the title of the highest mountain in Japan. It is 12,338 feet from sea level. To the Japanese it is known as Fuji-yama.

Its slopes are symmetrical, with the summit being hidden under the clouds. During the summer, the cap of snow atop the mountain melts, making the inactive volcano crater visible.

For the Japanese, Mt. Fuji is considered sacred and nearly 50,000 people climb to its summit each year.
