Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is located between Israel and Jordan. The Jordan River is located at the north end of the sea. The sea is famous for the fact that it is the lowest place on the surface of the earth. It lies 1,310 feet below sea level. It is for this reason that there are mass amounts of salt in the Dead Sea. In fact, the Dead Sea is nine times saltier than the ocean. Due to the extreme heat in this region, the freshwater evaporates rapidly, leaving behind salty deposits. Swimmers are able to float with ease on the lakes surface.
The Dead Sea is also referred to in the Bible. In the Bible it is known as the Salt Sea. One story in the Bible talks about a man named Lot, whose wife was turned into a pillar of salt along the shores of the Dead Sea. One explanation for this is the columns of salt along the lakes shore. Another religious artifact, the Dead Sea Scrolls, was found in caves near the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is considered one of the twenty natural wonders.
