The Cathedral of Notre Dame
Most commonly associated with the "Hunchback of Notre Dame", the Cathedral of Notre Dame has become quite famous. Located in Paris, it stands on a small island in the Seine River. The Cathedral is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture.
Notre Dame was built from 1163 to 1250ad. It was heavily damaged during the French Revolution, but was repaired in 1845. The Cathedral was one of the first to use "flying buttresses", which allowed more support for the high ceilings. It also contains a beautiful rose window designed by French artist Jean de Chelles. The window symbolizes events in the Bible. In the center are the Mary and the infant Jesus; on the outer rim are pictures of 64 kings and priests. It is one of the most beautiful rose windows in the world.
