Documents of Freedom


These documents are typical of the thousands on file at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis. The originals are handwritten on parchement but these samples come from microfiche copies.

Certicate of Freedom:
Free African-Americans carried papers to prove their status.

These certificates were registered at the county court house. A sample of the registration is shown below.

Registration

A document of manumition, in which the owner affirmed that he was setting the slave free, was also on file.
