Vanderbilt University Response

Dear Jaime:

Thanks for asking these questions. I hope I can answer them adequately.

1. Vanderbilt has about 5500 undergraduates, which is a perfect size in my mind because you always see someone you know walking through campus, but you don't see the same faces over and over. It is a self-contained university, and many people rarely venture far beyond its borders. The main reason for that is that about 90% of the students live in campus housing. There is always a lot happening on campus, and students find it a lot of fun. From theater productions to fraternity parties to cookouts in the quadrangles to football games, there is always something fun to do on campus. However, Vandy students are very conscientious about their studies also. The best way for me to describe campus life is that everyone studies really hard but also has fun, too.

2. My response to this question is going to be very similar to the first one. What I always tell people is that Vanderbilt is a perfect balance of academics and fun. You will receive a first-class education here, but no one ever gets totally buried in the books. That's not to say that classes are easy (believe me, they're not), but everyone seems to allow themselves a good amount of relaxing time.

3. Vanderbilt is committed to the principles of affirmative action. I spoke with an admissions officer about your question about affirmative action. She told me to send you the following, which is the statement that appears on the application:

"In compliance with federal law, including the provisions of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Vanderbilt University does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, color, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or military service in its administration of educational policies, programs, or activities; its admissions policies; scholarship and loan programs; athletic or other University administered programs; or employment."

I hope this helps.

4. Your GPA and the difficulty of classes taken are the most important factors in the admissions process here at Vanderbilt. SAT scores are next. Then, tied for third, are extracurriculars and sports.

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact us again.

Sincerely,

Herschel Hamner
