Dear Sonia:

Thank you for your interest in the University of Michigan. In response to your questions:

1. The best place to start to get a feel for the diversity of campus life is our web site at http://www.umich.edu. You may also want to identify alumni clubs in your area (again, use the web site) to discuss the Michigan experience and potential local scholarships.

2. This campus stands alone in that it offers the diversity of thought and opportunities that only a large public university can offer in combination with the pursuit of excellence in all efforts that is traditionally associated with elite private universities.

3. We are an affirmative action institution and constantly try to improve the diversity of thought and experience associated with UM.

4. Tough question -- You should consider that grades, curriculum, and test scores interact with one another as the primary criteria. We expect our students to be involved with activities outside of academics, although that is not true of every student. These activities will enhance your application if you have demonstrated a level of achievement at the state, regional, or national level.

Good luck with your college search and feel free to contact me if you have other questions.

Yours for Michigan,

Lorraine Lamey
