Thank you for your interest in Syracuse University! We applaud your initiative in researching various institutions during your college selection process, and are happy to be considered one of your choices.

Founded in 1870, Syracuse University is a private, coeducational institution situated on a hill over looking the city of Syracuse, the business and cultural center of New York State. SU is one of the finest student-centered research universities in the nation, boasting great oppotunities for undergraduate research and flexibility in curriculums. The university prides itself on its personal approach and excellent educational opportunities. SU offers over 200 programs of study through its 11 undergraduate schools and colleges, and is home to 10,100 undergraduate students; another 4,500 are pursuing graduate study. A diverse group, Syracuse University students hail from all 50 states and nearly 100 foreign countries.

Minorities are considered on equal footing with all other students applying for admission. Each student is considered within the academic environment from which they come to us. Academic performance in high school and the recommendations of teachers and counselors are very important factors in evaluating each student. The admissions Committee works diligently to identify the true academic potential within each student.

Of the 18% total minority enrollment, half of that percentage is African-American. Many organizations exist on campus with minority interest, from greek organizations to religious and academic as well as literary, political and social organizations. Students are encouraged to take part in campus life and to experience the diversity which pervades the atmosphere at SU.

Applicants to Syracuse University should pursue a strong college preparatory high school curriculum. Course work would include a minimum of four years of English, three years each of social studies, math, and science, and two years of foreign language. Applicants must also submit results from the Scholastic Assessment Test I (SAT I) or the American College Testing program (ACT). Finally, a completed application including high school transcript, guidance counselor recommendation, and student essay must be submitted. Other programs at SU such as architecture, art, drama, and music require a portfolio review or audition as well.

Students recently admitted to the University have typically been high "B" students and the middle 50% have scored between 1100 and 1300 on the SAT. As mentioned before, they come from a variety of backgrounds, with countless interests. Approximately 65% receive some form of financial aid, and almost one-third of them have qualified for one of our two merit scholarships. Students who have taken Advanced Placement courses are typically awarded a full year of credit with scores of three or better, depending on the program of study they have enrolled in.

We hope this information is of some assistance to you. We understand that finding a college to become your "home" in the years following high school is an involved, sometimes confusing process. At SU we'd like to help by providing you any assistance we can.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Admissions again. Good luck in your studies.

Sincerely,

Stephen R. Wilkins
Admissions Counselor
