Sonia,

Answers to a couple of your questions are available on our web page, http://web/admissions/www/gen/questions.html, so you may want to revisit those pages for info on our affirmative action policy and other information about student life.

In response to your question about ranking the various factors in Admissions decisions, MIT really doesn't have a policy on which factors are more important than others. All are important, and are like pieces of the puzzle.

You listed:
SAT/ other standardized test scores
grades/GPA
difficulty level of classes taken
participation in sports
leadership positions/extracurricular activities

I would have to say that participation in sports is really the only one that we don't depend on. We try to look for a combination of the others that will give us a picture of whether or not a student will not only succeed and thrive at MIT, but also contribute to the community as well.

As for life at MIT, I think it is like any other university, but everyone here is very interested in learning, and studies are taken very seriously. There are many opportunities to get involved in various areas: research, community service, sports, fine arts, or whatever you desire. That is one of MIT's strengths. I hope you get to visit MIT, so you can maintain your interest in applying.

Good luck in high school,

Sarah S. Sarvis
MIT Admissions Counselor
