Dear Sonia: Students here are very busy, both academically and socially. We have about 500 student activities, and since we are in a non-metropolitan area, most students spend most of their time on campus, including weekends.
Perhaps I don't know enough about the "rest of the pack" to adequately answer your question. Cornell has a very wide range of academic programs, from agriculture to hotel administration, from Engineering to Industrial and Labor Relations, and from arts and Sciences (liberal arts) to Architecture. Undergraduates center their studies in one area but have opportunities to take course work in several. Interdisciplinary studies and undergraduate research are big things here.
We work very hard to insure a diverse student body and are very committed to affirmative action.
The most important considerations are often the types (levels) of courses a student has taken and the performance in those courses and how well applicants express themselves on their applications (one thing you did not mention).
I hope this helps.
