The heel

Runners often complain of heel pain. The etiology usually involves the plantar fascia. Plantar fascitis usually represents tearing of the medial cord of the plantar fascia. Runners with this complaint present decreased range of motion at the knee, ankle and the first toe, in addition to overall lower extremity strength. Runners with this pain complain of excruciating heel pain with their first step on arising from bed in the morning. This pain is increased by a generally flexed hip, knee, and plantar flexed ankle sleeping posture. Treatment may include flexibility exercises for the plantar fascia and strengthening exercises of the foot and the muscles of the lower leg. The single most effective treatment for this condition has been the resting night splint.
