"You may learn much more from a game you lose than from a game you win.  You will have to lose hundreds of games before becoming a good player."
-Capablanca

While you are waiting...
First wait a little bit for the buttons to appear.  You will have the choice of learning how the pieces move, or try your hand at solving various levels of chess problems. You can also practice your skills against the Chess Dominion Machine in a variety of games. If you seek inspiration, check out the beautiful games played by some of the greatest players of all time.

When you see buttons, click on the window to the right of the button to select which piece you want to learn how to move, which problem set you would like to study, or which game you would like to play or see. Then click on the appropriate button.

Piece Tutorial
To go through the tutorial, first read the comments in the box at the top.  Then click on the forward button to make a piece move. When the pieces won't move anymore, you can go to the next section by clicking on the "Next" button.

Play
The games you are about to play will give you the chance to practice what you have learned.  You will get an opportunity to move each of the pieces and try to defeat a chess playing computer.  Of the games you will play, the first one- the Pawn Game- will be your most difficult.  We have purposely made this game the hardest.  The movement and placement of the pawns is perhaps the most important concept to learn in chess.  If you find yourself losing over and over again, do not be discouraged.  Just keep trying and you will find yourself playing better and better each time.  After you have mastered the intricacies of the Pawn Game, you will find the other games to be much easier.   In the games with pieces vs. pawns, the object is to take all the pawns if you have the piece, or get a pawn to the end if you have the pawns.

Problems
First choose which problems you would like to solve. The problems with the label "Tactics" give you some instruction to go along with the problems. There are three levels of mating problems, each building on the previous problem set. We recommend that you try solving the "mate in 1" problems first, because this will make it easier for you to find the mates at the next level.

Games
All of the games are amazing. Simply choose a person, and then click on the forward arrow to go through the moves. If you want to get a different perspective, click on the flip button to see the game from the other side. If you get confused and want to go back a few moves, just click on the back arrow '<' and it'll take you back. Enjoy!
