North America
Chess
came to North America mostly as a result of colonization by Europe.
It first gained it's popularity among the rich people who had lots of time
on their hands. It wasn't until Paul Morphy showed up in the mid
1800's, and captured the imaginations of people everywhere with his combinational
brilliance that chess gained wide spread popularity here. After Morphy's
time chess took on a new dimension. 120 years later, when Bobby
Fischer took the World Championship title, a chess mania began all over
the United States as people were captured by his genius.
Currently chess in America enjoys the role as a wonderful game to play
for fun and for learning. There are huge national scholastic tournaments
in both Canada and the United States several times a year.
