Australia

Australia has an active chess population. She is mother to the Melbourne
Chess Club, the third oldest chess club in the world. Cecil
Purdy, the World Correspondence Chess Champion from 1953-1958, had his
home here. Chess is becoming increasingly popular in the schools
here. The South Australia Education Department has created ICoN (Internet
Chess on Nexus) that lets kids play chess against each other across Australia
during lunch.
