Charles, I think this question illustrates why so much of teaching involves thoughtful, yet spontaneous decision making.

Some students I have seen get so cocky once they have beaten me that they are virtually unteachable thereafter . . . even though I've beaten them dozens of times and they have just beaten me once, or even if we have talked through the game for teachinmg purposes, and we have virtually collaborated on moves. Others take winning and losing as part of the game, and part of the often cyclical learning process. This may sound like a cop-out to your question, but I really believe we are usually best to focus on the love of the game and on individual learning, not on winning and losing, when we play with our students. We must take each student, each day with a unique approach to all of these questions. Too bad there are no pat answers . . . but if there were, anyone could teach.
