I think they must be challenged though. So
I was wrong to say just beat the 6-year old several
times. Maybe a two-step approach, first let him
know you recognize he does have talent either in
chess or something else, then say something like,
"OK, now I'm going to try my hardest to beat you,
because that is the best way for both of us to
learn". Maybe the best way, though, is to
arrange it so another kid not too
much older than him, but better, plays him a few
times.
Also, some people think losing to a computer is
less discouraging than losing to another person.
My opinion is, however, that chess computers
should not often be used
to teach kids, because social interaction
is important.
