chess and five year olds

Every Wednesday afternoon I teach a chess class of kids ages 5-7 at the Montessori Elementary school. I must say that this experience matches no other. It is fun, but yet often challenging. Often times kids are too restless during the afterschool hours and would rather run around outside playing tag than concentrate over the chess board. I try to spice up the class for them any way I can, playing various games, making jokes, holding class tournaments. I know the kids are fascinated with chess and are eager to learn. They just need a little more motivation. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
