I guess some moderation on both sides might be
appropriate! I think a combination of the
average woman being somewhat less aggressive
(as Charles suggests) and also, because of some
remaining biases in our educational system, less
inclined to pursue mathematics or logic, than
the average man, accounts for the fact there are
fewer women in chess. I think the second factor
deserves greater weight except, perhaps, at the
highest levels of the sport. I would disagree
with Charles that the loser of an intense chess
game always feels that bad. For example, if he
and I were to play and he won, I could still feel
very pleased with myself if I had played
to the best of my ability.
