Chess as a profession is actually superior in some
ways to other sports. It develops planning
and reasoning skills that are at least as important
as the physical fitness other sports develop, and
it is not as overrun by commercialism as are some other
professional sports. Chess professionals can also
find fullfillment by teaching others in or out of
the formal school system as this site demonstrates
so well. From a practical standpoint it is hard
to make a living just playing and teaching chess
in the USA, however, so coupling chess with a closely
related profession such as teaching might be better
for most people.
