I'm currently faced with a challenge of defending my view on why I think chess should be considered a sport. In Russia chess is considered a sport, one of the most popular by far. It's the first thing that appears in the sports news. However, in America chess is considered to be merely a hobbie, a board game, a quiet passtime for the retired elderly. But does something have to be a physical activity such as football or basketball to be labeled sport. After all, chess involves many other aspects in common with those sports, such as competition, preparation, pressures, etc. Dictionaries disagree on the definition of sport, so is it at all possible that chess can be included in that catergory? What do you think?
