Interesting. Theory has always considered 3...Ne4
to be White's major problem in the Vienna Game, as
other replies are considered to lead to more or
less advantageous (for White) lines of the King's
Gambit Declined.

For example, compare Alekhine's remark in the
first volume of his Best Games - that it was
*solely* on account of 3...Ne4! (his punctuation)
that he had (for the moment) given up the opening.

Interestingly enough, it was Euwe's fear (as
Black) of this variation that led him to lose a
famous game against Alekhine during their 1935
match.

Anyhow, I do not know of anything since that time
that has caused much change in the general
assessment of this line. There was a long standing
debate between Larry Evans and Weaver Adams
concerning it, but I don't think many players (if
any) particularly cared to listen to it. :)

Anyhow, with the revival of previously considered
"antique" opening (Scotch, Evans' Gambit, etc),
who knows... maybe Deep Blue will take it up, and
demonstrate forced mates for both sides? :)

Regards,

- John
