Balsam-tree Moss (Dendroalsia abietina, above) looks like any other moss when growing in mats on a tree. Individually, however, they look quite distinctive and almost tree-like in two-dimensions. When it dries, Balsam-tree Moss curls up like the scroll on a violin (above, right).

The sporophyte grows on a very short stalk (left).
