ESME

The infectious agent of ESME belongs to the group of viruses. They live in the saliva of the ticks and can be transferred by a tick bite. In endangered areas of infections about 1% of the ticks is infected. The risk of becoming ill after an infection with the ESME virus is 30%.
ESME is an infection of the lining tissue of the brain and the spinal cord. It often starts with the symptoms of the flu: fever, headache and pains in the limbs and can also lead to permanent paralysis. That is why you should be vaccinated against ESME. This vaccination does not protect you from Lymes-disease!
Once you are fallen sick with ESME there is no specific medical treatment. One can only try to alleviate the symptoms and strengthen the organismen of the infected person, e.g. by a ten-days bedrest.
