Physics Section
(of Golf Course Web Site)
Introduction
Hello, you have either intentionally or unintentially
stumbled upon The Golf Course's Physics Section. By now,
you know that The Golf Course is a web site designed to
promote the game of golf, and as an educational resourse
to show that golf can be seen in a variety of avenues of
our lives. This particular section (the Physics Section)
shows how golf is interwoven into physics. (For those
students out there ... I bet you thought that physics was
useless!) Anyway, we have a few sections to the physics
portion of the web site. They are outline for you below.
Text Book
For those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure of
taking a physics course in your school, we (the creators
of this site) wrote a physics textbook so that you would
not be left out. We wrote this text book the way that
students would understand the material (because we too
are students) and we also know how much more enjoyable it
is to actually understand the material!
For those of you who find yourselves in the position of
"I took the course ... I really did! But to tell you
the truth, I just don't remember it at all!" Well,
you too can benefit from the book because it will be like
a little refresher course!
Algebra
We know that sometimes it is helpful to have a little
refresher course in math before engaging in physics, so
we took the time to build that for you. There's even a
brief review of necessary math skills necessary to use
the equations presented in the book!
Labs
The Labs section is a section designed for students to
learn how to mathematically manipulate information to
determine how objects in the game of golf react. Students
will reinforce their physics abilities while learning how
much force that a golf club must exert on a golf ball to
get the ball to go in the hole, or how far a ball will
travel in the air. These interactive labs are built in
two forms. The first is java, for everyone who has the
ability to run java. Also, the labs have been written in
cgi, so that those who can not run java can still
participate. (I understand how annoying it is to have a
site built around java and not be able to participate!)
Topics
The topics section allow for you to expand your horizons
by taking the knowledge aquired in the textbook and in
the labs sections by writing articles for other people to
read about the physics of golf. We have written the first
few and it us up to you to add to this section and keep
it growing, so show us what you know!
Teacher's Corner
This section is for teachers. The Golf Course Team
designed this site so that it could be used in the
classroom environment. We worked closely with our coaches
to design suggested uses for this site in the classroom.
Please stop in and check out how this site can be used in
schools.
