Larry NELSON
Born: September 1947, Fort Payne, Alabama
US Tour wins: 10
Ryder Cup appearances: 3 (1979, 1981, 1987)

Between August 1981 and August 1987, Nelson won 'only' four US Tour events - yet three of them were major championships. His favourite day is August 9. Both his USPGA titles (1981 & 1987) were won on Sunday 9th August.

Didn't start playing golf until he was 21 years old, after serving two years in the military service. He has an excellent Ryder Cup record, winning his first nine matches in the series. In winning the 1983 US Open at Oakmont, he played the last two rounds in 132 strokes (65-67), which is still a tournament record for the final 36 holes. Nelson had started the third round seven strokes off the pace. The quiet, unassuming, Nelson has a reputation for being a steely competitor. When he won his first major title in 1981 (USPGA Championship), he started the final day four strokes ahead of Fuzzy Zoeller in second place. Eighteen holes later, the cool, calm, Nelson had maintained that margin over the rest of the fieldsfter firing a final day 71.

Larry Nelson has won three major titles.
