Bernhard LANGER
Born: 27th August 1957, Anhausen, Germany
European Tour wins: 34
Ryder Cup appearances: 8 (1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995)
When the inaugural Sony Ranking was published in April 1986, Langer had the honour of being the first-ever world number one. He remained there for the first three weeks. He has yet to win the British Open despite finishing in the top-3 on five occasions. Three of his top-3 finishes were at Royal St. George's (1981, 85 & 931). Through to the end of l995, Langer had won at least one official European Tour event every year, for the past 16 years.

Both his major victories have come at Augusta. In 1985, the key moment came at the par-4, 1 7th in the final round, when Langer holed a birdie putt from 14-feet. It allowed him the luxury of taking a bogey five at the final hole and still winning the title. Eight years later, Langer won by four shots. The decisive moment was an eagle three at the 13th, when Langer sank a tricky downhill putt. Once again he bogied the 72nd hole.

By the end of 1995, he had won nine European Tour events in his own country - German Open (1981, 82, 85, 86, 93); German Masters (1989, 91); Honda Open (1992); Deutsche Bank Open (1995). He led Germany to a famous victory in the 1990 World Cup in Orlando, Florida, when his teammate was Torsten Giedeon.

Bernhard Langer - twice the Masters champion at Augusta.

Langer's putting stroke might not look to great but it can function effectively at the highest level.
