Reading Greens
Introduction
Many people say that half of the game of golf is played on the green and they are right in saying that too. It may take one to four shots to get to the green and it may take one to three putts to get the ball into the hole. So strokes can be made up on the green with good putting. Obviously to play golf, you need to be a rounded golfer in all aspects of the game.
Stance
In a putting stance, there are a few key aspects that should be found in all good golfers. You see, that everyone has their own style putting, and it is important to find your own style and learn how to manipulate the stance to accomplish what it is that you want. The key is to be consistent. So here are some suggestions to putting perfection:
- Make sure the bend in your waist is great enough so that your head is directly over the ball. This way you will be able to correctly sight the line of the ball.
- When you swing, swing with your arms. Lock your wrists and you will have more control over your swing.
- You can place yourself so that the ball is centered between your legs although many golfers like to line the ball up like they would for a drive ... just behind the front foot.
- Swing the putter smoothly to avoid any jerkiness. Many golfers swing the club smoothly like a pendulum.
- Some people reverse their hands on the a putter to try and lock the front wrist. For a right handed golfer, try and put your left hand on the bottom of the grip instead of the right hand. This will lead to increased stability in the wrists and overall a better shot.
Reading Greens
The final part of putting is reading greens. Not all greens are flat and not all greens run at the same speed. Some of the conditions of the greens can be determined before you play your round of golf by spending a little time on the practice green. The other part is determining how fast to hit the ball and where to hit the ball to get it in the hole when the green is sloped. This only comes with practice and experience.
