Driving distances

I've been reading and hearing claims every for for 40 years that : this new driver adds 30 yards to my length. Now let me see if I've got this right - 40 years x 30 yards per year = drive of 1,200 yards minimum!! So, does anyone have the truth about driving distance stats? I reckon Jack Nicklaus in his heyday playing with modern golf clubs wouldn't hit the ball one inch further. The extra yards gained, and I don't think it's that much, in these days is because of golf ball technology. Anyone got info please?
