Golf ball distance testing

I am looking for ideas on how to structure a lab test (or series of tests) to arrive at a reasonable answer to the question... is it worth it for the AVERAGE golfer (90-110mph swing speed) to spend money on golf ball technology relative to distance. In other words, should you or I spend $45 on ProV1's or 19.99 on Top Flite 2000's when it comes to distance? Any thoughts on constructing such a test, or if anyone could direct me to existing such data/articles would be appreciated.
