Body of Message: : Why 18 holes of golf ? Why not 10 or 12 holes ? There's no real reason why a course can't have any number of holes. However, most clubs were modelled on the R&A at St Andrews both in structure and rules. The Old Course (being the only course at the time) during a great surge in interest in golf, in the late 1800s had 18 holes, and other course were built in that tradition. The Old Course originally had 22 holes, but was reduced in the late 1700s.
