sand putting surfaces

When I was a kid, my Dad and I played on small courses in Illinois and Missouri that had sand putting surfaces. The rest of the course was just like a green putting surface cours. A smooth edge was provided at each 'green' and, once on the 'green', the rake or smoother was used to create a smooth path to the cup. I can't find anything in any of the search engines I have used. Can you tell me where I can find some written information.
