Some believe that the origin of the term fore used when mis-striking a golf ball are as follows:

British artillerymen would yell "beware, before" in order to warn their comrades of incoming stuff from the bad guys that were firing shit at them. The nature of man is to shorten something as clumsy as "beware before" in order to get it out before your comrades have eaten the aforementioned shit for breakfast.
