William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April, 1564 and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon England. His parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. John Shakespeare was a merchant and a glove maker. Mary Arden came from a wealthy family who owned a farm a little way out of the town. William Shakespeare was the eldest son and was born in a little house on Henley street. It is believed that he attended the Edward VI Grammar School for most of his schooling and in 1582, when he was 18 years old, he married the 26 year old Ann Hathaway. In May 1583 the couple had a daughter whom they named Susanne. In 1585 they had twins; Hamnet and Judith. William was believed to have left Stratford for London in the late 1580's. He then supposedly joined Lord Strange's Company of Actors who performed in inns and taverns around London. He also wrote plays for the Company. It is thought that Anne and the children stayed in Stratford. |
