What is Electronic Mail (E-Mail)?

E-Mail is the second most-used part of the Internet (next to the WWW). It's a lot like Postal Mail, and I've personally heard it referred to as "voice mail done right." With it, people can send you messages. You can save the messages, print them out, archive them for use with other programs, reply to them, or send them to someone else. E-mail messages usually have 2 main parts: the Header and the Body. The Header contains information like who the message is from, the date and time the message was sent, the subject of the message, and the person that it is going to. Here is a sample header:

From: 41884916@turboma.dyn.ml.org
Date: Tue, 25 Jul 95 08:38:20 EST
To: mail@you.com
Subject: Important Financial Information...

Almost everyone on the internet has an e-mail address. This address will be something like me@somewhere.com. It would be wise to memorize your own e-mail address, so you can give it to people so they can send you mail.
