Netscape 3.0 Mailer

E-Mail is very popular on the Internet. It's only fair that you know how to use it as well as you know how to click on links on web pages. But, sorry, it's not as easy.

NOTE: Just because you have Netscape installed doesn't mean you can use it right away for your e-mail. Contact your Internet Service Provider's Customer Support department to find out how to set up Netscape for use with your mail account.

There are two windows that you'll have to get aquatinted with to send and receive e-mail. The first is the Mail window (for anything less to call it). The second is the composer window. Both are discussed below. But first, How do you get to your Mail windows? And how do you know when you have mail. This question is easily answered by the same answer.

At the bottom-left corner of your Netscape windows is a picture of an envelope. It might have a question mark next to it, or an exclamation mark, or no symbol. But the envelope will always be there. When you have new mail (and Netscape is set up correctly to work with your e-mail account) a yellow exclamation mark will appear next to it like in the picture shown here.

Clicking ONCE on the envelope will bring up the Mail window shown here:

To get your new mail, click on the "Get Mail" button at the top of the window. Wait for the moving 'N' icon to stop moving before doing anything else. If you have a lot of new mail, it might take a few minutes. The section in the top-left window with the folder Icons is for filing your messages away to save and read later.

The section in the upper-right is a list of all the messages on your computer. The green diamond signifies am unread message. The red checkmark is for you to flag important messages. Just click on the message you wish to read and the message will appear in the bottom half of the window.

To file your messages away to read later, just drag the message into the desired folder. To delete it, select the message in the message part of the window, and press the delete button in the toolbar, or press the DELETE key on your key board. Deleting messages puts them in the trash folder, so in case you accidentally delete something important, you can go back and get it. To empty the trash folder, go up to the File menu and select "Empty Trash Folder".

Now click here to find out how to compose your own messages.
