Journey into the Atom: Operating Instructions

  Previous | Java-based | Forms-based | Next

The following is a set of operating instructions for the journey. If you use JavaTM, go to the Java operating instructions, and if you are using Forms, go to the Forms-based instructions.

Java Instructions

Good for you, you use Java. There are, of course, numerous instructions for the sophisticated equipment you will be using. Hopefully, through the use of Java we have simplified it so that the experience is as painless as possible.

Getting Started

To get started with the journey, just click inside the cool Java applet inviting you in. This will take you to the launch site of the journey. Please wait for a while since it takes a while to load the equipment. Images will appear in the top-left portion of the console. To the right is a heading telling you where you are and a description of what you are looking at. At the bottom of the console is a set of navigation buttons, which are discussed next.

Button Navigation

The four buttons along the bottom of the console take you to different places. The "Back" button [] takes you back to the briefing checklist, NOT the last site in the journey you visited. The "Forward" button [] takes you to your debriefing. There, you will re-cap what you learned in the journey and learn much more about particle physics. The "Zoom Out" button [] will take you to the last site of the journey you experienced. You CANNOT use your browser's back function to go to the last site of the journey. The Home/Start button [] will take you to the launch site of the journey.

Site Navigation

Each site in the journey has particular hotspots that take you to different areas of the journey. Move your mouse over the images in the top-left portion of the console and click on hotspots you see. If your browser has a status message bar, a short description of the destination will be displayed. Note: If an image or the description does not immediately display, the cause may be server/internet lag. Please be patient while waiting for images to load.

Miscellaneous

Some instructions in the Briefing Room are very important to users of Java. If you do not have it enabled, your browser will not load the Java applet. Please follow the instructions in the Briefing Room and make sure you have Java enabled before entering the Java-based Journey. Also, if you are at low-resolutions (or you do not know), we request that you hide the toolbars on your screen so you can see the entire applet in a single window - no scrolling! Most computers come with 800 x 600 screens, so you are probably OK. If you can not see the whole page when you enter the journey, then please hide your toolbars.

Forms-based Instructions

The forms-based interface looks just about the same as the Java interface though the navigation is just a little bit different.

Getting Started

To get started with using the Forms-based Multimedia Console, just click the "Forms-Driven" button near the bottom of the Briefing Room checklist. This will take you to the first site in the Journey. Images will appear in the center of the screen. Text will be displayed below it, and the navigation buttons will be just below the text.

Navigation

Since the older CGI Scripting requires some parameters to be passed to it via the web, the module uses image maps to use hotspots on images. Move your mouse (if you can use one) over the images and the hotspots should clearly appear. For browsers that don't support client-side image maps, or if you just can't manage to get the mouse to stay over a hotspot, there are links at the bottom of the page that can be used with all browsers.
