How to quit smoking:
Every year, three million smokers give up cigarettes . With the right attitude, preparation, and knowledge, you can be one of them and add to that total. The main step in the process of quitting is deciding to quit and sticking to that decision.
Decide to Quit:
Think about reasons to smoke, reasons to quit, then write them out. Add to the list for a week. Spend half an hour thinking about whether you want to smoke for the rest of your life or whether you want to quit. If you decide to quit someday in the future, pick a date and stick with it.
Think positive:
Have a positive attitude. Tell yourself you can do it this time. Make it a new years' resolution. Studies show that smokers who use this mental preparation are more likely to be nonsmokers a year later.
It's better for you:
The Surgeon General's Report on smoking and Health in 1964 concluded that smoking was harmful to one's health. In 1990, the Surgeon General's Report concluded that stopping smoking was beneficial to all smokers, no matter what age or condition.
Below are the choices you have to quit smoking :
Nicotine Gum-Nicotine is absorbed through the membrane of the mouth between the cheek and the gums. When properly used, it takes about thirty minutes to absorb all the nicotine from the gum.
Nicoderm CQ - a nicotine patch, A smoker applies the patch to an area of skin to recieve a steady dose of absorbed nicotine. The patch should be rotated to different locations of the upper body to minimize skin irritation. The optimal length of treatment is not know and is dependent on the individual needs of the patient. The usual length of the treatment is six to eight weeks.
Habitrol and Prostep--nicotine patches, available by prescription. Consult your pharmacist or doctor for details on how to get these.
Nicotrol NS--nicotine nasal spray, sprayed directly into each nostril, absorbed through nasal membranes into veins and returned to the heart, then sent to the brain. Quicker delivery than gum, but not a cigarette.
Hypnosis--Hypnosis is used as a way to prevent yourself from even touching another cigarette to your mouth ever again.
And...Cold Turkey: Quitting by your own willpower. This is the toughest option here.
