If you were to only wear one of these articles of clothing while biking, make sure that it's your helmet! Since a helmet is so important, we have an entire page on helmets, which includes: the importance of wearing them, how to fit them, etc. A visor is a great addition to a helmet though because it will keep the sun out of your eyes and will also prevent the sun from giving your face a brutal sunburn!

Eye protection is one of the most important things that a cyclist owns. It will keep the flies, dirt, mud, rain and UV rays out of your eyes so that you can enjoy the ride.

Jerseys are great because they are lightweight, breath well and dry quickly. If you are stuck in a rain storm, trust us, you'll be glad that you're wearing one! Cotton takes three times as long to dry as the lycra/cotton blend that jerseys are made out of. Also, jerseys usually come with a great pocket in the back which allows for you to carry perhaps a map, banana, energy bar or anything else that you can think of!

If you happen to fall while biking and are not wearing gloves, you will end up scraping your hands and will not be able to ride for awhile and you don't want that, do you?! Gloves are padded which makes the handlebars a bit more comfortable and prevents blisters from forming on your hands. Once you buy a pair of gloves, just watch out for the funky tan lines!

Ask any rider and they will tell you that cycling shorts are the key to a comfortable ride as well as preventing scrapes in the event of a fall. Like cycling jerseys, the shorts are made of a material that is lightweight, made to dry very quickly. Most cycling shorts are made of a stretchy lycra material that should fit tight against your skin, but not so tight that it cuts the circulation off. Some shorts come with an inner layer that is lycra and a baggy outer shell made of cotton. Also, many shorts come with some sort of padding so that you won't end up with "saddle sores" at the end of a long ride!

There are many different takes on what to wear for shoes. Some people buy special shoes that will clip onto their pedals, which makes for a very comfortable ride on long trips, but others will just recommend wearing a stiff-soled shoe, like a pair of sneakers for example. If you decide to go the sneaker route, we recommend that you buy toe clips.
