The same rules apply to biking in the mountains as biking on an off-road trail-- and then some. When you bike in the mountains you must always prepare yourself for the worst. During rides in the mountains you may come across more difficult situations than in regular rides, therefore you must prepare yourself. And NEVER bike in the mountains alone.
Before you go:
- Check the forecast. Weather conditions can change very rapidly in the mountains.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you should be expected back.
- Be responsible. Don't plan a ride that is out of your ability or go further than you really can.
Clothes to take:
- Gore-tex gloves and socks. They're worth the extra expense.
- It is essential you reduce the heat loss from your head. A balaclava goes under your helmet and does this job.
- Wear clothing that quickly dries if it gets wet. If your clothing holds water you may get wind chill, which can lead to hypothermia.
- Extra clothing. Just in case you crash and need a set of dry clothes to keep you warm while you head on home.
Emergency equipment:
- Survival blanket
- Whistle- if you get lost in the dark this will help people to find you.
- Red LED light
- Halogen front light - This type of light is essential if you get lost in the dark and need to find your way out.
- High energy food
- Thermos of hot drink (coffee is best)
- Compass and map
- First-aid kit
- Swiss army knife and matches
