The first Africans to come to America never had a chance to show their African heritage through art because the slave owners knew that this was one of their common means of communication. They feared the slaves would get together, destroy the plantation, and escape, so they discouraged art. In recent years, black art has been rediscovered and has become very popular. Included on this web site are directions for creating African American art projects.
