This web site is an introduction to just a few important black men and women - those who have been honored on United States postage stamps.

The black Americans featured on U.S. postage stamps reveal the part blacks have played in the history of our country. From the earliest beginnings, both slaves and freedmen have excelled in an amazing variety of careers, triumphing over great handicaps of prejudice and discrimination to do so. These are the pioneers in their respective fields whose talents range from publishing to exploration, from painting to law. Doctors and artists, educators and inventors - these men and women featured on Black History-related stamp issues were first in their fields and showed the way to the gifted blacks who have followed them. Their talents perseverance, and the inspiration they have provided for others have won them the lasting respect of all Americans and it is for these reasons they have been honored by the United States government.
