Ning Ma

(Ning Ma, the composer of the Mars anthem)

Dr. Ning Ma was born in Harbin, China on August 24, 1983. She came to the U.S. to join her parents, Dr. Jun Wang and Yu Ren Ma, in 1989 when she was about six years old. Brought up in a bilingual family that enjoys both the American and Chinese cultures, Dr. Ma developed an interest in and appreciation of both Wetern music and Chinese music.

Dr. Ma won numerous awards in piano competitions in Illinois, Iowa, New York, and California. As a talented middle school student, she was selected to participate in Johns Hopkins Univeritisy's Mathematics and Verbal Talent Search, the 1996 College Board SAT test for talented 7th graders, and the 1996 SMC/National Mathematics League.

Dr. Ma received her bachelors degree in pre-med at age 20 and her MD at age 26. She became a world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon and worked at Minneapolis Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 2048.

Throughout her career as a cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Ma saved many people's lives and made tremendous contributions to the field of medicine, particularly cardiology.

Dr. Ma has remained active in promoting scientific research and cultural interchange through her piano performance and music composition. Mars Anthem was one of her early works, composed when she was thirteen years old.
