Welcome to Koinae's Sickbay! In this facility, Doctor Joseph Eagle treats injuries and illnesses the colonists come down with, just like doctors on Earth. However, Dr. Eagle is the only doctor on Mars, which means he is responsible for the health, mental and physical, of the 50 plus people living in Koinae! Sending people back to Earth for treatment of diseases or injuries is not an option except for emergencies. Because of the large distance between Earth and Mars, it would be very difficult and costly for ships to transport sick people from Mars to Earth to see a doctor. In fact, after years of living on Mars, Koinaeans would not even be able to return to Earth itself because the gravity and atmospheric pressure of Earth is so much greater than that of Mars that it would cause anybody who had lived on Mars for that long great pain, possibly even death. Emergency treatment of Koinaeans would have to be done in Earth orbit. Koinae is a dangerous place for the unalert. Most of Doctor Eagle's medical expertise is spent on treating injuries the colonists receive while doing their various jobs around the colony. Because of the controlled environment, Koinaeans rarely suffer diseases. A contained environment is very stressful for the people living in it. The colonists are with the same people, day in and day out for what is gong to be the rest of their lives. People in these situations can become volatile and dangerous. In Koinae, everyone is essential to the success of the colony; if one person cracks, it's everyone's problem. It is Dr. Eagle's responsibility to monitor people's behavior in the colony for signs of mental instability. If someone is suspected of being under too much stress, the good doctor takes steps to relieve the pressure and help the person relax. So far, under his care, Koinae has continued to be a prosperous colony for nearly ten years.
