The Taste of Koinae

Eating in Koinae is done in the Colony Civic Center, with everyone together, except for the people on Galley duty. Koinaeans eat three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, just like people back on Earth.

Galley Duty in a daily thing. People sign up for the day that they will be on the Galley Staff; anyone who doesn't sign up gets Galley Duty for fifty days, one day for everyone in the colony (no one has ever not signed up). The Galley Staff is comprised of ten people who prepare the colony's food all day.

Breakfast in Koinae is totally vegetarian, with bread, oatmeal, or some other grain product. At lunch, the colonists enjoy a modest portion of fish from the Fish Farm, more grain products, and green salad. Dinner varies. Sometimes they have salad and fruit, vegetable soup, or some vegetable invention concocted by the "chefs" in Koinae. On special occasions, fish is also served, but these occasions are rare.

The Koinaean diet supplies is nutritionally well balanced. By eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, the colonists receive most of their daily requirement of vitamins and minerals. Because vitamin B12 is not available in a vegetarian diet, the colonists eat fish. Fish also comprises much of the calorie content of the Koinaean diet.
